God’s Truth Has No Expiration Date!
There is so much in life which can be beneficial to a person, but only for a while. After that, the same can become toxic, and even lethal. Food items and medications may renew life, bring stability, and provide healing, if consumed at the right times, in the appropriate quantities, and within a certain time frame since purchase.
Remedies, especially, are labelled with warnings related to the limits of their effectiveness and safety. What was initially good and life-enhancing will spoil with time, become poisonous, and inflict harm.
Many products are also introduced to society as “newly improved,” and offering extended duration. Yet, even these, reach a point when their benefits are no longer feasible. In many ways their validity expires!
Every human product decays and vanishes. Even to human creatures, there comes a time when they are no more. Holy Scripture declares and human experience fully confirms that “it is appointed unto humans once to die” (Hebrews 9:27). None of us will ever leave this world alive!
Yet, God has given to the human race something which is perpetually valid and continually relevant. And that is His Truth revealed in Holy Scripture. The principles therein contained are not limited by time; they are not for one generation only, and not for another. Indeed, God’s Truth has no expiration date!
For these reasons “Christian convictions must be commitments of permanence” also, as Dr. R. Albert Mohler eloquently argues. The faith once delivered unto the saints is intended to make a continual difference in each life it touches. Its healing power is not circumscribed by any period of time; it affects individuals and societies wherever and whenever its message is faithfully disseminated!
Instead of rushing after novelties, one needs to recognize the value of what God has declared to be permanently significant to and for His chilren.
While some things end, and others appear as novelty, it is safer for Christians to hold on to the things that do not pass away! Dr. John Piper affirms that “truth and beauty and goodness are not determined by when they exist. Nothing is inferior for being old, and nothing is valuable for being modern.”
Because of this biblical understanding, Christians through the ages hold on to “the old, old story of unseen things above,” and often cry out: “Give me that old-time religion…it’s good enough for me,” insofar as it accurately reflects God’s eternal Truth! More than being “old,” God’s Truth is ageless. And it has no expiration date either!
